Today is 2554th Buddha Jayanti, anniversary of the three major events – Birthday, Enlightenment and Nirvana in the life of Gautama Buddha, the apostle of peace and the founder of Buddhism. This is also called Buddha Purnima.

This is the most important events for the Buddhist. Followers and monks visit Buddhist monasteries and Stupas – specially Swayambhu, Maha Boudha in Kathmandu – all around the world resound with sermons, prayers and recitals of Buddhist scriptures throughout the day. They offer candles, incense, flowers and a variety of fruit to the statue of Lord Buddha.

Stupas and monasteries are decorated with the Prayer flags which is hanged for luck and happiness.

This post is specially dedicated to Buddha and Buddhahood. On this very auspicious day, we would like to write some of his quotes:

* Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

May Peace and Love Prevail in the World

But many of us do not know or may wonder how this small yet beautiful country got the name Nepal.

There are many anecdotes and stories are believed by scholars, historians and local traditions related how the country Nepal got its name. Some of are as follows:

The word “Nepal” is believed to be derived from the word Nepa: which refers to the Newar Kingdom, the present day Kathmandu Valley. With Sanskritization, the Newar word Nepa became Nepal. The Newars of present day Nepal, refer to all the inhabitants of Kathmandu valley and its peripheries (called Nepa:) before the advent of Shah dynasty.

Some other people believed, the word “Nepal” have been derived from the Sanskrit word nipalaya (nip+aalaya), which means “at the foot of the Himalaya (Mountains)”. Also the word Nepal is believed to be related to Tibetan word niyampal, which means “holy land”.

According to Skanda Purana, a Hindu sage named Ne established himself at the valley of Kathmandu during prehistoric times and that the word “Nepal” came into existence as the place protected (pala in Sanskrit) by the sage Ne. The etymology of the name Nepal means, “the country looked after by Ne”.

Whatever is the history behind naming Nepal but there an interesting definition of Nepal in English in which each letter tries to describe Nepal in its own way.

Nepal = Never End Peace And Love.

This is quite interesting so that to spread this definition to worldwidely we have created some T-Shirts with the Map of Nepal with some National emblems on front and this definition on back.

On this day Bhraman and Chhetri communities in Nepal change their sacred thread called Janai or Yajnopavita; sanctified by the Bhraman Priests after taking a holy bath or dip in the river. And the other communities tie Janai or Doro or Tago on their wrists from the Bhraman Priests.

This festival is very much popular among the Hindus. People have belief that if some one ties Tago on this day by the Bhraman Priests; and offer them donations; they will earn virtue and blessings from the God for auspicious life. The sacred thread Janai and Tago is venerated as a feature of Lord Vishnu and it protects us from being and kind of spiritual sickness as well.

And on this day sisters tie Rakhi on the wrist of their brothers. and it is a unique bond between a brother and a sister which celebrate to show love and affection shared between a brother and a sister. Sisters tie a delicate cord of Rakhi on this day and pray for their brothers long life. Brothers, in turn, give them Rakhi gifts and vows to protect and care for them life long. So it is called Raksha Bandhan.

And on this day mainly the Newar community cook a special food called Kwati a mixure of sprouted legumes and eaten with wheat-bread (chapati). Kwati is the Newari word and the literary meaning of it, is hot soup. It is a soup of nine-mixed-beans – Black-eye Peas, Cow Peas, Black Lentils, Mung, Peas, Rajmas, Chickpeas, Soybeans, Favas. Some mix more beans too.

Janai Purnima signifies the end of the rainy month and beginning of the cold season in Nepal.

Newar farmers offer different food items to frogs on this day. Belief holds that worshiping the frog, which is considered an agent of the God of rainfall, by making offerings of different food items help to increase the production of crops.

Thus all celebrate Janai Purnima or Raksha Bandhan with great enthusiasm.
